DAY 6 - Wikis and Social Networking.

DAY 6 - Wikis and Social Networking.

Today we looked at Wiki’s and Facebook and their relevance in the world of Information Sciences, we also had a brief tutorial on how to clean up data with open refine.

The day started out with us meeting up with Isak at 9 AM in the library auditorium, he quickly explained to us the agenda for today. After that, we proceeded to go to the Natural science labs, where we will be working for the most of the week.

When we reached the Natural science labs we started out with a quick ‘refresh’ lesson on what a wiki is and how they relate to information science. We learned that a lot of information scientists are tasked with keeping a wiki up to date and to make sure that the information contained in the wiki is correct. After the lecture, we were taught how to create and maintain a wiki, along with how to edit or contribute to another’s wiki and how to enable other people to edit or maintain our wiki.

After wikis, we were given a quick lesson on what data and information carpentry is and how to access the different free learning sites. Before lunch, we had an in-depth lesson on how to clean up data and information by using open refine. This is a very useful tool for people who want to rework and clean up data and do not have the required programming skill in languages like python, that can be a very powerful data clean up and management language if used right.

After lunch, we looked at social network platforms like Facebook and Twitter. We had an in-depth lecture on Facebook and how everything works, from the basic functionality like what Facebook is and how it is used to the more advanced background process like the algorithm they use to determine what to display on your feed. We also learned about some of the limitations of Facebook, like the maximum limit of friends you can have or groups you can be part of. We also took a look at the privacy of Facebook and how to make your Facebook profile more private for your own safety.

Lastly, we had a quick overview of Twitter and how to use it. We looked at how Twitter works and some advanced features of Twitter. We also had a discussion about what is considered to be bad practice when creating tweets and hashtags. e.g. Making a hashtag that is in all uppercase or lowercase letters can be difficult to understand.

All in all, today was not a very productive day as all of the stuff we were taught are things that we have been taught before in class or is already general knowledge. I look forward to what we will be doing tomorrow.
